When choosing the length, consider the material thickness of all parts:

When choosing an M8 channel nut with a 17 mm thread length, including screw and washer, 4.4 mm of usable thread length remains for the material to be fastened, for example:

17 mm thread - 3 mm C-rail - 8 mm nut - 1.6 mm washer = 4.4 mm
